DD-WRT is a firmware that helps you improve the performance of your routers. The process of using a DD-WRT is similar to like rooting an Android smartphone. DD-WRT is an open-source upgrade and provides advance level controls to enhance the stock firmware. Since the firmware acts as a skin over your default router, you will need the default login credentials of DD-WRT>
In this guide, we will share the process to login inside the DD-WRT router and also explain the features and common user issues. These routers came in 2005 and ever since have been giving protection and total control of a network in the user’s hands. You will see a web interface where you can interact with this firmware. Let’s dive in.
Steps to Log Into DD-WRT Router
There are two ways to log in. One way is using the GUI method that requires a browser while the other way is called the Telnet method which requires entering some commands.
Method 1: GUI or Web Interface Method
Similar to logging into a normal router, for a DD-WRT router, you need to enter your router’s default IP address and begin the process:
Step 1: Open Web Browser
Step 2: Enter the router’s default IP address 192.168.1.1 in the URL
Step 3: You will get the login screen where you need to enter the Username and Password
- Default Username for DD-WRT Router: root
- Default Password for DD-WRT Router: admin
Step 4: You will enter the default gateway where you can configure the settings accordingly
Method 2: Telnet Method
This method requires you to use telnet and SSH (Secure Shell) commands to access the router’s command.
Step 1: Open the command prompt. Can be done using typing “cmd” in search bar in windows
Step 2: Type the command “telnet” in the box
Step 3: In the next box, you need to type the login details: username and password. Type “root” as the admin and “admin” as the password
