Zyxel offers a wide range of routers, extenders, switches, and other products to extend your Wi-Fi coverage, whether it’s in your home or office. If you have tried setting up a router in your home before, a ZyXEL router follows similar steps. It is not a complicated process for those who are new to it, so there’s no need to worry.
This article explains how to set up your Zyxel router out of the box to get you connected online quicker.

How to Login to a Zyxel Router
When you receive your Zyxel router, unpack everything from the box and set up the hardware. Then, you'll be able to log into your device and make essential security changes. Follow these instructions to connect your wireless router.
1. Find your router's login information listed on the router.
Your Zyxel router should have a sticker on the side listing your equipment's information. It will include the default IP address, default admin username and password, and the default SSID and password. Write these values down (or take a picture with your cell phone) before attempting to log into your device.
2. Double-check your computer's connection to the internet.
If your computer is hardwired to your router – or the two devices are connected via an Ethernet cord – you are already connected to the internet.
However, if you attempt to log into your device wirelessly (which isn't recommended), you'll need to connect your computer or mobile device to the internet before logging in. On your device, click on the wireless icon to show the available networks nearby. Select the correct connection, which is the same name as your default SSID. Enter the SSID password and click "Connect." Open an internet browser on your computer or mobile device to make sure you are connected to the internet.
3. Open an internet browser on your computer.
4. Enter the router's default IP address, 192.168.1.1, in the window—press Enter.
5. In the login prompt, type in the router's default admin username and password. Click OK.
For most Zyxel routers, "admin/1234" will be the default admin username/password combination. Some routers will use other credentials, so check your router's sticker for the correct default information. Clicking "OK" opens the router's main menu.

Your Zyxel router may be a router/modem combination, so you won't have to connect to a modem. This video shows the router's basic setup and the differences between the Ethernet ports on the back.

Resetting and Rebooting a Zyxel Router
Knowing how to reset your Zyxel device is important for proper maintenance. A reboot or a reset will usually solve any performance problems with your device. Some issues a reboot or a reset may fix are:
- I can't log into the router.
- Can't connect to the internet
- Slow Internet
- The router stops working after the configuration.
What is a Reboot?
To reboot your device, all you have to do is turn it off and turn it back on using the power button or unplugging the unit. Also known as a "Power Cycle," a reboot clears the router's memory, resolving most connection issues. Unlike a reset, it doesn't erase any settings on your device.
What is a Reset?
A reset involves specific steps to return the device to its default settings. Using the "reset" button on the router will begin this process. After pressing and holding down the button, the device will reset itself. When it turns back on, the factory default settings are restored.
How Do I Reset My Zyxel Router?
You can use two techniques to reset your device using the reset button or the router's menu.
Using the Reset Button
Follow these instructions to reset your Zyxel router with the reset button.
1. Make sure your router is plugged in and turned on.
2. Find the reset button behind your router.
3. Use a paper clip, a pen, or a SIM-card removal tool to press the recessed reset button. Hold it down for 10 seconds.
4. Release the button when the lights on the router start flashing.
5. Wait until the router resets itself. It will turn off and then turn back on again.
6. When the router turns back on, the default settings will be restored.

Using the Router's Menu
Complete these steps to use the router menu to reset the router.
1. Log in to the router.
2. Click on the "Maintenance" tab.
3. Select "Configuration."
4. Click on "Reset to default."
5. The reset will start automatically. Please do not make any changes while the router resets itself.
6. The router will return to factory settings.
The following YouTube videos will help you reset your router:
If you have a DSL modem, this video will show you how to perform a hard reset, a more aggressive reset than the one described above. It would help if you did a hard reset when the ordinary reset doesn't work.
How to Configure a Zyxel Router
Once you have logged into your device, you should change your security settings. This makes it hard for hackers to access your internet connection. The three most important changes you should make are changing the admin default password, changing the SSID network name, and changing the SSID password.
Changing the Admin Password
Follow these instructions to change your device's default admin password.
1. Log in to the router.
2. Select the "Maintenance" menu.
3.Click the "User Account" submenu.
This may also be named "Administration."
4. Change your admin password (and confirm those changes) using the text boxes on this page.
Depending on your router, you may have to enter your old password (the default admin password listed on the device) and the new one.
5. Click "Save" or "Apply."
When the login prompt appears, enter the router's admin username and the new password. This will log you back into the router so you can complete the rest of the configuration steps.
Updating the Service Set Identifier (SSID) and Password
Complete the following steps to change the SSID and Password.
1. Log in to the router if you are not logged in already.
2. Select the "Network" or "Network Settings" menu.
3. Click on the "Wireless LAN" or the "Wireless" submenu.
4. When you reach the next page, make sure you are directed to the "AP" or the "General" tab.
This is where you will change your SSID information. Moving down the page, finish the rest of the steps to update your internet settings.
5. If you have dual bandwidth, use the arrow in the "Band" field to select one of your bandwidths: either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

To change the SSID name and password, click on the “Network Setting” menu, and select the “Wireless” menu. (Source)
When you have saved your new SSID settings for this bandwidth, you will complete the other steps.
6. Make sure the box next to "Enable Wireless LAN" is checked.
This allows wireless devices to see and connect to your internet.
7. Use the dropdown menu to change the "Channel Selection" setting to "Auto Channel Select."
Click the box to uncheck "Enable SSID Autogeneration" (if this option is available to you.)
8. In the "Name (SSID)" field, enter the new name for your internet connection.
9. If you want other devices to see this internet connection, uncheck the box next to "Hide SSID."
If you don't want other devices to connect to your internet, then leave the box checked.
10. In the wireless security section of the page, find the "Security Mode" field. Use the drop arrow to highlight "WPA2-PSK."

This is the most reliable security protection you can use on your router.
11. In the "Encryption" field, highlight "TKIP/AES."
12. Click the "WPA Compatible" checkbox.
13. Make sure the "Enable Key Autogeneration" box is unchecked.
14. Change your SSID password in the "Pre-Shared Key" text box.
15. Check the "Enable QoS" box to use this service.
If you have many devices, the Quality of Service setting will prioritize your uploads and downloads to prevent your data streams from jamming up and slowing down. This is an optional setting. Read your user manual to learn how to activate and configure the QoS settings.
16. Click "Save" or "Apply."
Return to the top of the page. In the "Band" field, use the dropdown menu to select your second bandwidth.
17. Repeat steps 6-16 for the other bandwidth.
When changing your SSID, there should be a slight difference between the new names. They should be similar enough for you to know they are both yours. One should be labeled with the bandwidth speed, so you know the difference between your bandwidths. For example, if your 2.4GHz bandwidth is named "Z1234," then the 5GHz bandwidth should be called "Z1234-5GHz."

Now that your router's security settings have changed, you can use your home or business internet without worrying about others getting access to your private data. It will help if you are consistently diligent about running antivirus software and monitoring your internet usage through your device's menu.
