HARDWARE & SPECS
Main Features & Benefits
Here are some of the best features of the Arris SBG6700-AC modem router combo. It is an old model, but it has continued to serve its users for years.
Beamforming
The Arris SBG6700-AC is a basic modem-router, given its low specifications, but Arris went out of their way to include beamforming into it. Instead of fanning the signal aimlessly around the house, beamforming targets a specific device, so it gets the best signal.
Maximum Throughput of 1,600Mbps
Having a 1600Mbps throughput for your wireless internet means you get a good connection for your wireless devices. This also means you can download your favorite movies on your mobile devices.
Easy to Install
This device is effortless to install, set up, and configure. All you need is to stick the coaxial cable into the coaxial port and turn on the power. Then you can continue setting up your modem and configuring its security settings and parental controls.
Advanced Security Features
Just like the other Arris modems and devices, this modem-router comes with fantastic security features. Prevent unauthorized access with WPA2 and WPA-PSK. Create a secure password or passphrase, mainly a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
Set up your firewall filters by choosing High, the safest configuration with the highest security. Select from the dropdown menu the Wi-Fi version you are protecting, then click Apply.
Setting up parental controls is more complicated. You can block access to specific internet sites and web addresses. You can also set time limitations for computer use and internet access.
However, you need to log in your time access and websites and addresses you want to block. This can be frustrating at first, but after a while, you‘ll get used to adding more websites and addresses you want to block from your network.
Affordable
At just over $100, you can get a modem-router that works for your network. If you don’t have much budget for a more expensive modem and router, this is a good alternative, especially if you are subscribed to 100Mbps internet or lower.
Two Gigabit Ethernet Ports
Older modems usually work on older WI-Fi versions, but this one is future-proofed that it still works even if it first came out in 2014. Proof to this is the Gigabit Ethernet ports, but it also works for 10Mbps and 100Mbps internet speeds. Admittedly, it only has two ports, but it works well for adding an Ethernet Switch or wired devices.
Cons
Only 8x4 Bonded Channels
With more modern Wi-Fi protocols, you need a modem that can keep up with it. Though the Arris SBG6700 AC modem works for Wi-Fi 5, with just 8 upload and 4 download channels, it can get congested when you have too much traffic going on. However, since this modem operates best for 100Mbps internet plans, you can work on this device seamlessly.
Poor Tech Support
Because of country-based tech support, some English-speaking callers get non-English speaking technicians, which isn’t very helpful. Some buyers also complained of poor customer service, contrary to the company’s promise.
Unreliable Wi-Fi Speed
This modem runs on a slower processor than most new modems, so you experience unreliable Wi-Fi sometimes.
What is the Arris SBG6900-AC Best For?
Best for Lower Internet Plans
Because of its low specifications, this modem-router combo is best for lower internet plans up to 100Mbps. It cannot handle higher internet plans with its limitations, but it is enough to use for lower internet plans.
Best for Rural Areas
Not all modems and routers work in cities and highly populated areas. The Arris SBG6700-AC is one of those devices that work best in rural areas with lower internet demand, and ISPs provide a basic internet plan.
What Buyers Have to Say About the Arris SBG6900-AC
We went through online shop reviews and found very credible reviews to help you find the best modem for you.
This is a decent cable modem to use as a replacement for the one that most cable companies rent to you. Save money and buy this one instead. It provides a better signal and a faster level of supported WiFi service. It was easy to set up while following the included instructions. This well-known brand assures you that it is a product that you can trust to provide years of service.
I had to write this review to acknowledge how good this wireless router has been .In three years I’ve rebooted it like twice and I blame COX for those. 1st Arris I have had and if this thing ever breaks (ssshhhhh) Ill go right back to Arris. Thanks, folks good work !!
I bought this to replace an old SBG900 that I had for 12 years. It was easy to set plug it in and set up, I had my home network settings established and secured within 10 minutes of opening the box. I am educated and experienced in the arts of computers and networking, but I believe an inexperienced person could figure out to use this hardware without too much trouble.
The WiFi works as advertised and is compatible with your 802.11 wireless home network standards. The 2.4G broadcast is very strong through walls, the 5G is great in the same room (or line of sight).
Conclusion
The Arris SBG6700-AC is a good alternative for a low-cost modem that works perfectly for your 100Mbps internet plan. Although it works on just 8x4 bonded channels, it is still enough for your internet plan. It is also easy to install, set up, and configure.
This modem router combo also has a good throughput of 1,600Mbps. You can connect your wireless devices to it without issues. It can have some buffering when you open too many tabs at once. To make this device work, limit the number of tabs opened at once.
