What is a Wi-Fi Extender?
A Wi-Fi extender is designed to extend your Wi-Fi signal to areas of your home where the signal is typically weak. Areas of a weak Wi-Fi signal may include but are not limited to your front or back yard and even some rooms inside your home. Depending on the size of your home, you may find some rooms have a weak Wi-Fi signal. If that’s the case, it may be time for a Wi-Fi extender.
How Does a Wi-Fi Extender Work?
A Wi-Fi extender works when you program the extender using your Wi-Fi router. Depending on the instructions, it will be used to extend the Wi-Fi signal in your home. Once you properly program it, you’ll plug the extender into the nearest electrical outlet at the halfway point between the router and the farthest area you want to extend to.
What Makes a Great Wi-Fi Extender?
Finding a Wi-Fi extender can and will be tricky. So it’s good to know what makes one stands out among the rest of the pack. There are features and characteristics you’ll need to look for in order to distinguish a great Wi-Fi extender. Here is what you need to look for in a Wi-Fi extender:
Price
If you are on a budget, you’ll want to find a Wi-Fi extender at a reasonable price. But don’t confuse that with finding an extender for a cheap, low price. Find the best you can afford in terms of signal strength and reach (among some additional features). The last thing you want is purchase a cheap extender that will end up being useless.
Great Range Coverage
Not every Wi-Fi extender is created equal. Some will have a bit more range than others. So it’s important to know which extender is best for your home. Your home might be large enough to have a room or two where Wi-Fi may be weak or unavailable. Also, you can find one with a good amount of range to at least get it in some parts of your yard.
It Can Handle Multiple Devices
A great Wi-Fi extender should have the ability to handle all kinds of devices. These devices include but are not limited to mobile phones, tablets, Smart TVs, and weather stations (to name a few). Unfortunately, some Wi-Fi extenders won’t have the bandwidth to support such devices. So it’s important to find a Wi-Fi extender that will handle a good number of your favorite devices without becoming overworked and slowing down your internet connection.

They have been growing in popularity over the years, especially with people randomly walking up to doorsteps and stealing packages. Pros and Cons of Wi-Fi Extenders
Below are the main pros and cons of these:
Pros
Knowing the common advantages of a Wi-Fi extender is key. That’s why it’s always good to be well-informed about them before you consider purchasing one. Here are a few common pros you can expect from a Wi-Fi extender:
Most of Them Will Cover The Entire House
If you are looking for a Wi-Fi extender, the good news is that almost any available on the market will have the ability to cover your home from the upstairs to downstairs or from one end to the next. It will depend on the type of home you own (single-level, split-level, etc.) Find one that will give you the right kind of coverage and say goodbye to those dead zones for good.
Most are Easy to Install Within Minutes
If you purchase a Wi-Fi extender, it will include all the equipment you need for an easy and painless installation. This means you won’t need to do anything complicated nor purchase any additional equipment to ensure that it will work. Most will take as little as 15 minutes or less to set up.
Some Will Boost Your Wi-Fi Speed
While extenders usually intend to expand your Wi-Fi signal from one end of the house to the other, some will have a built-in booster to make sure your Wi-Fi speed is boosted considerably. Most extenders go from kilobytes to even megabytes per second instantly, once installation is all said and done.
Cons
Indeed, with the pros come the cons. And there are some common shortcomings a Wi-Fi extender may have. Pay close attention to this section since you may need a Wi-Fi extender to fulfill a specific need (i.e.--outdoor signal connection). Here are some cons to be aware of:
Some, But Not All Wi-Fi Extenders Are Outdoor-Compatible
Most Wi-Fi extenders will be best compatible to handle connection your devices. But not all of them will have the materials and the ability to work in an outdoor setting. This will be evident in instruction booklets of a Wi-Fi extender (i.e.--indoor use only). If you must have a Wi-Fi signal that will extend outdoors, you should consider an outdoor Wi-Fi extender.
Those Made For Single Levels Won’t Work For Multi Levels
One of the more common issues that a Wi-Fi extender can have is the reach of any upper or lower levels of your home. Wi-Fi extenders meant for single-level homes will cover end to end, but may not always cover any upstairs or downstairs rooms. Sometimes, it might take two single-level Wi-Fi extenders to get the job done. However, if you want a Wi-Fi extender that will cover multi-level homes, be willing to spend a bit higher on the budget scale.
How to Set up a Wi-Fi Extender
While it may be easy to set up a Wi-Fi extender, it might be difficult if you don’t know what you are doing. If you are stumped, we’ve put together a guide on how to set up a Wi-Fi extender in your own home. Follow the instructions below:
- Unpack the extender and plug it into an electrical outlet near your current internet router.
- Check for a WPS button on your router to ensure that it is compatible with such a setup. If it does, you should be good to go. If not, you may need to follow specific instructions for a non-WPS setup, depending on your router. The WPS button should be located either in the front or rear of the router.
- Press the WPS button on the extender and the WPS button on your router. The LED light will be a solid green once a connection is complete. If the router supports 5 GHz, repeat the process.
- Unplug the extender and re-plug it into an outlet that is halfway between the router and the area of your home where the Wi-Fi signal is poor or non-existent. The router LED should be a solid green or amber if you found a good spot. If it’s red, unplug and find a new outlet.
- Once the connection is established, connect your device of choice to your extended connection. Your passwords should still be the same. Remember, your network name will have the extensions of _2.4G and/or _5G respectively.
- Test the extender by going into the room where the Wi-Fi signal was poor. Return to the extender to ensure that the Client LED is lit solid green or amber. If you are able to load anything using the Wi-Fi with your device, at this point you should be done.
Conclusion
The best Wi-Fi extender for you may be on the above list. Choose one that will give you the best coverage and is compatible with any device that you own. You may experience a nice boost in speed, but will certainly get a good amount of coverage throughout your home. It’s always nice to have a home with no Wi-Fi dead zones to speak of. If you hate dead zones as much as the next person, a Wi-Fi extender will likely be your best bet in making sure that every device is online, both indoors and outdoors.
People Also Ask
The following is a list of frequently asked questions by prospective buyers looking for a Wi-Fi extender. You’ll need to use this section as a guide so you are better informed about Wi-Fi extenders to find the best one possible for you. Here are the following questions:
How Far Can a Wi-Fi Extender Reach?
Typically, a 2.4GHz extender can reach up to about 150 feet indoors or 300 feet outdoors. A 5Ghz (especially newer routers) will likely reach a similar distance or slightly beyond that. If you are looking for an extender that may go a bit farther, a 5Ghz is the way to go.
Which is Better, a Wi-Fi Repeater or Extender?
If you want stable, consistent Wi-Fi signal, an extender will more than likely be your best option. It will rely on one device while a repeater will need to rely on two devices and more equipment to extend a currently-existing Wi-Fi signal.
Does a Wi-Fi Extender Slow Down the Internet?
Even if a Wi-Fi extender does not have a speed booster, it won’t make much of a difference. To answer, no it will not. But if you have a built-in booster, it will obviously do the exact opposite.
Can I Use a Router as a Wi-Fi Extender?
Yes. In fact, there are those who utilize their old routers as Wi-Fi repeaters, since two devices are needed in order to expand the Wi-Fi connection using this method. As long as you have adjustable antennas available, they should work just fine.
Can You Use Two Wi-Fi Extenders?
Yes. But they will each need their own SSID. One should not wirelessly connect to the other but should be connected to the main router in order to acquire the Wi-Fi signal. For best results, use a powerline (or Ethernet cable) for one extender and leave the other one completely free of wires.
